CORN ADDICT

Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were originally created to ‘clear the mind of sinful thoughts’

Anti-sex campaigner Mr Kellogg believed that a bland and plain diet was the key to stop people masturbating
KELLOGG'S Corn Flakes were originally invented as an "anti-masturbatory morning meal" to reduce the urge to pleasure yourself.
The bland cereal was designed to put people off sex and discourage them from pleasuring themselves, according to Kate Devlin's new book, Turned On: Science Sex and Robots.

The book, which explores how robots could shape our sex lives, also describes how sex was a touchy subject for John H. Kellogg, the brains behind the household breakfast cereal in the late 1800s.
Mr Kellogg, a physician, Seventh-Day Adventist and anti-sex campaigner, believed that the key to curing pleasure cravings was through a bland and "healthy" diet designed to "reduce such urges".
He was such a firm believer that sex was damaging to the mind and body that he slept in a separate room from his wife and never consummated the marriage, choosing instead to adopt all their children.
And he thought self-love was even worse, writing: “If illicit commerce of the sexes is a heinous sin, self-pollution is a crime doubly abominable.”

Businesses that turned out differently to when they started

SOME of the biggest household names had far more humble beginnings - selling things far from what they do today. Here are how some of the brands started out:
The Sanctuary Spa - The Covent Garden-based house of relaxtion was originally set up in 1977 by a "man madly in-love with his balerina wife". The spa was a place for dancers to unwind and relax.
Wrigley - The brand behind Skittles sweets, Juicy Fruit and Orbit started out as a soap-making business back in 1891 until the chewing gum side of the business took off.
Marriott Hotels - The international chain of hotels started as a root beer stand in Washington DC. back in 1927. Their stand eventually grew to a restaurant enterprise and then a hotel chain.
Nintendo - It's always specialised in games but back in 1889 it sold Japanese and Western-style playing cards.
Tiffany - The luxury jewelry chain started out selling stationary in 1837 on Broadway in New York City.
Nokia - Now famous for making phones, the Finnish firm started out making paper from its wood pulp mill. Founder Fredrik Idestam opend a second mill on the river in Nokianvirta which inspired the company's name.
He claimed symptoms of masturbating including mood swings, bad posture, acne, epilepsy, palpitations and a fondness for spicy food.
Keen to stop the public from touching themselves, he went into business with his brother William to sell the tasteless breakfast dish.
"Having visited a Corn Flakes factory, I can confirm that it was one of the least arousing places I have ever been," writes Kate.
