Travis Scott

'Look Mom I Can Fly' documents Travis Scott's rollercoaster ride

Travis Scott straps into a rollercoaster at the beginning of Netflix documentary "Look Mom I Can Fly." It's an obvious, and completely fitting, metaphor for the past few years of life.
"I feel like at some points in life," he says as the wind whips through his braids, "you have to just be extreme."
That credo has turned the Houston native into a superstar. "Look Mom I Can Fly" attempts to capture the frenetic energy that surges through Scott and his live shows. For Scott and his "ragers," it's more than a concert. Scott has created a culture, a community who look to him for inspiration. It's seen in fan interviews where breathless young men thank Scott for saving their lives and giving them a sense of belonging.

"Before I leave I just want to leave the whole world inspired. I just want to leave a trail of inspiration," Scott says.
Directed by Scott and White Trash Tyler, the 85-minute film centers the madness amid Scott's unflagging love for Houston and his home life with Kylie Jenner and daughter Stormi Webster. It's edited and filmed like a fever dream. We see Scott visiting the childhood room he shared with his autistic older brother in Missouri City. Kissing his granny goodbye. Reuniting with his high school principal and a guidance counselor Scott says saved his life.
Scott returns home as an adult several times in the film. Missouri City declares Feb. 10 as Travis Scott Day. Mayor Sylvester Turner designates Nov. 18 as Travis Scott Day in Houston. He hosts a block party at Root Memorial Square Parkacross from Toyota Center to celebrate his Air Jordan IV shoe collaboration.

Scott is there when Jenner has an ultrasound, concerned that the doctor is pushing too hard on her stomach. It's touching to watch him talk about his daughter just after her birth, telling a friend that she immediately stopped crying when he came close. (Watch through the credits to see Scott and Jenner dancing to "Baby Shark.")
Particularly compelling is footage of Stormi interspersed with similar shots of Scott as a child: a birthday party, a ride in an electric kid car. There's also grainy video of a six-year-old Scott visiting Astroworld.
"Astroworld," the album, tour and theme park, anchor much of "Look Mom I Can Fly." The album's name, of course, comes from the Houston amusement park that closed in 2005. Scott works in the studio with Tame Impala's Kevin Parker and James Blake, both featured on the album, less than two days before its release.
  • Scott's inaugural Astroworld Festival, held near the original site on the NRG Park grounds, drew 40,000 fans in November of last year. It was a monumental achievement that should serve as a blueprint for future festivals.
